IVA Test Advice

Post by Si Richards »

Evening all,

I am starting to see the finish line (well thats what im telling myself anyway) and wanted to pick your collective brains about the IVA. Westfield have told me that I need to put it through the IVA with no windscreen, no doors and borrow one of their high back seats but looking through some pictures it seems that some have managed to get round these issues. From Elva11's pictures he only has one seat in the car which I assume was to get round the passenger headrest issue does this effect how you can finally register it? ie would it only be registered as a single seater unable to carry passenger.

Sorry if these are daft questions but I would rather fit the low back seats straight off if possible rather than have to either drill two lots of holes or fabricate a floor plate so that the highback seat from Westfields fits the holes I make for the low backs.

Thanks in advance.

Si

Si,

I remember thinking long and hard about this and the interpretation of the rule book. I think i remember reading on the locostbuilders website, that the examiners can only test what is there. Therefore if only 1 seat, they can only test that seat and harness etc. I also wasnt sure where this would leave you after IVA, ie would the car be classed as a single seater? Probably not, i cant remember this being a classification on the pass sheet. In your case is the le mans hump and pad classed as a head restraint on the drivers side?

When i put my car through i made some very thin seats to get the height right for the upper seatbelt mounting, then i made a pair of head restraints made up of a ply back with a bonded on foam front and covered this in the same cloth as the seats. These were mounted to a roll hoop that i had made up and bolted in the car, they looked terrible and I had to make them twice as they failed the first test being 5mm too narrow! Eventually passed fine though.

Hi Ben

Thanks for your help I have also had a chat with Ian who made something similar to you and doesn't live far from me so I am going to borrow it for the test. The Le mans hump will cover the drivers side with a pad for a headrest so I just have to fit Ian's contraption for the test. I'm still a little way off booking it but want to get these bits right.

Cheers

When do you think you'll be on the road, Si?

Sounds like you're motoring along (no pun!).

Hi Jon

Hope your well, it's a tough one to call as I always was aiming for this summer, I'm still confident that it will hopefully be by July/August :? :? :?
I'm moving house at the moment which is slowing the progress but if I can string some days together in the garage who knows!!!

Cheers

I haven't as yet taken pictures I'm afraid. I decided against fitting the runners on the drivers seat as would have meant different heights for the passenger and drivers seats plus it will only be me driving it so have fitted them for me. On my seats there were no holes drilled at all so I decided on the best points drilled the holes then got the positions right marked it all and drilled the floor pan. I hope this will be ok for IVA (now I'm worrying!!!!)

Will update the website soon a the rear lights are done and look the business.

Cheers Si
