Measured the spring heights and they're pretty consistent at 1.418 vs MED's recommended 1.380 - 1.400. So less than .020 out. Talking to MED they can't think of anything else that could cause the problem so it's head off and add some .020 shims. To be fair they're sending the shims with a fresh head and manifold gasket FOC. Another job for the Easter holidays!

Pulled and stripped the head yesterday. Sure enough MED had written on the face "valve height 1.437". Doh. My earlier measurements were not accurate with the springs in place. Re-built with 040" shims to bring it back to tolerance. Hopefully sorted. Also re-packed the silencer with some woven glass cloth fromThermal Veocity (Manchester). Claims to be better than the usual dense fibre glass mat - we'll see....
Decided to fit oversize alternator and water pump pulleys (from Mini Spares). Mainly to give the alternator an easier time when the engine is at 7000 rpm.

Make sure youve torqued the alternator pulley nut to FT!
you can never get the buggers off when you want to but they come of when you dont want it - happened to us on my first race car - especially important with standard water pump. Also mark it so you can see if it moves.
