The only thing you need the v5 for is to both register the car with and show at iva for the correct (smoke only) emissions test. You basically show to the tester at IVA, which they use to date the engine and then you present the v5 with all your other paperwork when you come to register the car, there is no requirement to show the chassis plate from your car.

In short, you dont need to notify dvla for your purposes, as the number will have no use on your car.
