First MOT question

Post by Si Richards »

Morning all,

No doubt this question has done the rounds before but wondered if anyone has a recent experience of it.

My car is coming up for a year old in October and was registered showing 2016 as date of registration but on an "age related plate" my question is: Do I need to get it Mot'd now or do we get the 3 years grace as per a new car?

There are many views both ways and my understanding was that it would require one on its first anniversary but there is no actual clear guidance that I have found on the DVSA website. I don't mind MOT'ing it but if I don't need to I'd rather spend the money on petrol :D :D :D

Cheers
Si

Simon,

The DVLA website states that a car (up to 8 passengers) MOT is due 3 years from date of 1st registration

https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/when-to-get-an-mot

I've checked on the DVLA Tax/MOT checker it clearly states the date of 1st registration for you car as Oct 16 and manufacture as 2016.

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

It might be worth checking with either the DVLA/VOSA/police but there doesn't appear to be any special case for kit cars being 1 year (there are some vehicles that are listed as needing at 1 year), the tax renewal used to say whether an MOT was required.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the information, that all makes a lot of sense I have to say. My only concern was that I know if you have a Q plate you must tax it 1 year after but mine isn't a Q of course, however on my V5 is does state that it was built with some parts that might not of been new and wondered if this was the bit that meant you had to have it done early. I think the safest bet is a phone call and see what they reckon.

Thanks again for the details.

I have just come off the phone from the DVSA and they have confirmed that my car will not need an MOT until its 3rd birthday 8-) 8-) 8-)
Apparently it's all dependent upon how the application is arranged when it's first registered after IVA, he said that although my car was built using some used parts they take each one case by case and my car shows the manufactured date and the date of registration as the same so in effect it is deemed a new car.

Happy days!!!!!

Si,
Excellent result, hopefully I'll get the same, although even luckier would be to get age related and historic status for no tax and (legal) silver and black number plates.
