I currently have eared spinners like the ones below:

Will the ears be an issue for IVA, or do I need to source some like these instead?

Yeah you need the 2nd non eared spinners for the test. It is not so much that the ears may catch on things (they don't) it is because that as they are effectively a nut they can be torqued up to a specified amount rather than being bashed on by a mallet. If it's short term- just for the test I have some (rather dog eared ones) and a spanner if you would like to borrow them.
