Datsun Cogs

Post by jonclancy »

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Jan in sunny SoCal, and even have a drive of his very well-sorted XI. Off we went, town streets, highway, and (best of all) the canyons near him. Mulholland Drive ring any bells?

One of the parts of Jan’s XI I particulary like is the 5 speed, Datsun gearbox. This is a standard shift, not dogleg 1st, and works very well indeed.

Being as I am a seeker of Hens’ Teeth, I have had a search out on a B310 box on for as long as I can recall.

Important: The box is from a Datsun 210 (Model B310). The B210 is the wrong box. Capisce??!!

You need a FS5W60A.

Long story short, one popped up on the Bay. An excellent seller who is down-sizing his huge collection of Datsun and other stuff. A deal was done and a pallet loaded. I did a lot of research to make sure it was the correct box for our purposes. It for the Datsun A Series engine. Not like OUR A-Series, but similar tech that was licenced in the 50s.

Look at some of the threads on the MGEXP forum, and you will find a few pics etc to help identify the correct box.

For example:

https://www.mgexp.com/forum/mg-midget-f ... n.3118557/

Even better is going to the Datsun 1200 forum. Their tech wiki is superb. All the info you probably need is here:

http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki ... tification

http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki ... ansmission

My box came with the release bearing and fork, but no gear lever.

I doubt one will come up on eBay any time soon, but… there is a short shift lever and install kit available here:

This gearbox is a PITA to work on, apparently. So it’ll be off to a Pro to rebuild for me. Rebuild kits are available and not too expensive. Individual bearings etc are listed on the wiki.

Or the whole shebang here

I’m hoping to get this in my car this Year. The current box is whining like a BA pilot, and really ought to be retired.

Cheers!

Ah, merely a substitution for VC10 pilot. An age-old brick-bat, recycled for a cheap laff! :D

There is a box available in Malaysia, but they do seem genuinely rare.
