Stephen, the problem with using incorrect bearings is that the hub will not be located as it should be on the stub axle, if you look at this http://www.mgexp.com/article/mg-midget- ... rings.html it should explain all.

Moss are fine with returns. Just declare them surplus to requirements. Meanwhile, order and fit the correct ones from the start and forget about them for several thousand miles. Most of the kits available "fit", but the bearings used don't meet the original specification. Not only do the correct face-centred bearings last much longer (MUCH longer!), they adjust-up better in the first place and (being quite specialist) are only ever manufactured by the most reputable manufacturers (usually SKF).

An awful lot of the pattern parts, available from Moss and the like, are made from low quality cheese. Thankfully, you'll find plenty of us here who've made all the usual mistakes for you......

You can read of my own questioning of the need to spend three times the price on page 5. I bit the bullet and the front hubs went from being a constant hassle to fit-and-forget! I followed the footwork done by Jon and used the bearings be ferreted-out, sourced from Engineers Mate. See page 4 for both the bearing numbers and a link to the supplier.

Your last comment seems the sensible one. Use what you have got and fix it if and when it needs it. Built up with all new
bearings etc. I can't see anything catastrophic is going to happen.

You are right, Bob. I've had a look at the bearings. They have the chamfer on the inner edge of the inner bearing inner race, just like the article describes as necessary. They look to be a reputable make of bearing, maker's name etc on the inside of the outer race of both bearings. They've come from a reputable company who specialize in supplying parts for old MGs. It would be daft not to use the bearings IMHO.
